In pursuit of a million dollars in a year I’ve had to wrestle with the demon inside.
I am not talking about a little red devil holding a pitchfork hanging on my shoulder.
I mean negative self-talk.
The voice inside your head that tries to convince you to stay small, to aim lower, and risk less.
For the majority of my life I didn’t know I had any control over my thoughts.
I presumed that the thoughts that came my way were both automatic and right.
Never thinking that my thinking was creating how I was feeling, both emotionally and physically.
Boy was I wrong.
It wasn’t until I discovered life coaching that I learned that we can choose to believe or not to believe every thought we think.
After acquiring essential tools and knowledge about the power of the mindset, I began taking my first major step on my journey of internal transformation.
Becoming aware of my thoughts.
At first it felt impossible.
A rapid fire of thoughts coming my way.
Sometimes indistinguishable, other times loud and cruel.
My brain was flooded by thoughts about my to-do list, my body, my life, my relationships, my productivity, my past, my future, my present.
I even had thoughts about my thoughts.
Then I learned to slow down and pay attention to the thought that elicited a response in my body. That brought on a specific feeling.
Imagine a stick of dynamite.
You light the end. (That’s your thought) and then it explodes. (That’s your feelings).
I quickly found that if I focused on the explosion i.e. the strong feeling that I could then connect the dots back to the thought I was having.
For example, feeling the heaviness of procrastination in my body about writing my next blog post, asking myself, what thought am I thinking?
The thought is: I am never going to make a million and I am going to look like a fool blogging about it.
Then comes the mindset practice.
Which is deciding whether or not I want to believe that thought to be true OR swap the thought.
To be honest with you, 85% of my thoughts started out pretty f*cking unsupportive and negative. And it’s important to recognize that there is such a thing as negativity bias and our brains are wired to notice the negative.
But that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way.
We possess the power over our minds. Which also means we control how we feel.
How do we take back the power over our mind, especially when the negative voice inside of us is yelling?
We make a choice.
To either believe the thought we are having or replace it with something more empowering.
We possess the ability to rewire our brain. Transform how we think and see the world through the act of replacing old thoughts with something new. Over and over again. Until eventually we deeply believe the new thought to be true.
One question I like to ask myself is whether the thought is hurtful or supportive?
It if is hurtful, I swap it for a more supportive thought that resonates with me.
For example, noticing feeling discouraged by the heaviness in my chest. Connecting the dots to the thought I am having.
The thought is: I am never going to make a million dollars. And it feels like sh*t in my body to think this thought.
So now it’s time to either believe the thought or swap it.
I decide to swap it to…I am becoming someone who can make a million dollars. I am building a million dollar business one day at a time.
And just like that, the weight of the discouraging feeling is lifted. I already feel lighter with this new thought. And here is where the mindset practice comes in, you keep repeating the new, supportive thought until it sticks. Which takes time and practice.
Transforming your mindset is a daily, minute-by-minute discipline.
It does get easier with time, but you gotta pay attention because that demon inside of you is going to rage. It’s going to scream at the top of it’s lungs, especially when you are trying to change your life, or do something big like make a million dollars in a year.
It’s up to you to decide whether or not you are going to believe that negative voice or take power over your mind. It’s all within your control.
